Leadership in Sports Diplomacy
Course Introduction
Leadership in Sports Diplomacy is a four-week open course (every Thursday, two hours online), offered by the Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland.The course is designed and delivered by recognized experts in this field.
It is being offered as an open online course and can be attended by anyone who is, or aspires to get, involved in the industry of sports – including sports administrators, government officials working in sports governance, executives in national and international federations, club presidents, directors, and managers, professionals organizing sports events, and policy-makers involved in national and international sports governance, among others.
Course Content
The course covers key topics in sports diplomacy, including the role of sports in fostering international relations, building effective partnerships and collaborations in sports, leveraging sports to drive social and economic impact, promoting sports as a powerful tool for national branding and cultural exchange, and ensuring strategic governance, compliance, and ethical practices in the global sports landscape

- Study Format : 100 % online per Zoom
- Tutorial fees for the whole course : CHF 790 to be paid at least one week before the course starts.
- Admission Requirements : Anyone who is, or aspires to get, involved in the industry of sports can enrol for this course.
- Internet access and an email address are required.
Course Structure
Week 1: Introduction to Sports Diplomacy (2 hours)
• What is sports diplomacy?
• Definition, scope, and importance in modern governance.
• The intersection of sports, governance, and international relations
• Key responsibilities in managing sports-related diplomatic relations
• Using sports as a tool to build and project national identity
• Building partnerships and understanding the global governance landscape
Week 2: Sports Diplomacy in Action: Events and Relationships (2 hours)
• Building partnerships with international sports federations and organizations.
• Strategies for collaboration with NGOs, governments and private stakeholders.
• Hosting and Participating in Mega-Events.
• Promoting your organization internationally through strategic participation in events.
• Navigating political sensitivities and controversies in sports.
• Addressing Diplomatic Challenges in Sports.
• Creating a lasting legacy through successful participation or hosting sporting events.
Week 3: Social and Economic Impact through Sports Diplomacy (2 hours)
• Driving Social Change through Sports.
• Using sports diplomacy to address societal challenges (e.g., inclusion, equality, and human rights challenges)
• Economic development through hosting events, sponsorships, and sports tourism.
• How sports diplomacy can support broader government objectives.
• Integrating sports into national branding and policy frameworks.
• Case studies: How sports clubs and federations have driven local and national benefits
Week 4: Leadership and Governance in Sports Diplomacy (2 hours)
• Building leadership capacity for diplomatic excellence in sports organizations.
• Navigating ethical challenges and ensuring governance transparency.
• Ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards.
• Strategic Planning for Sports Diplomacy
• Developing and implementing long-term diplomatic strategies.

The Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland (ALSS) is an international education institution that offers continuing education, further education, and post graduate advanced education courses, workshops and programs focusing on advanced studies in Leadership and Management. The ALSS also offers short courses that are not credit- bearing, and do not lead to formal qualifications. All attendees who attend for the Leadership in Sports Diplomacy course will be awarded certificates of successful attendance by the ALSS.
