INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL ESPORTS LAW
Course Introduction
The course Introduction to International Esports Law is a four-week open course (every
Wednesday two hours online), offered by the Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland,
Zurich.
The course is designed and delivered by recognized experts in Esports Law. It is being offered
as an open course and can be attended by anyone who is, or aspires to get, involved in the
industry of Esports-including Esports administrators, publishers, promoters’ lawyers, Esports
agents, current and former Esports players, among others.
Course Content
The course covers specific topics related to Esports, including national and international
regulation of Esports, law directly applicable to Esports, governance in Esports, Esports, dispute
resolution in Esports, Antidoping in Esports, player contracts and other topics.
Course Details
- Duration of the Course: 4 weeks (every Thursday two hours webinar at 14h00 CET)
- Language: English
- Start Date: 22 May 2025
- Study Format: 100 % online per Zoom
- Tutorial fees for the whole course: CHF 490 to be paid at least two days before the course starts
- Admission Requirements Anyone who is, or aspires to get, involved in the industry of esports can enrol for this course.
- Internet access and an email address are required.
Course Structure
Week 1: Introduction to Esports Law (2 hours)
• What is Esport? • Introduction to Today’s Professional Esports Business Ecosystem • Sports Law and Esports Law: Differences and Similarities • Governance in Esports: Regulatory Challenges • Collaboration with Traditional Sports • The IOC Esports Games: Opportunities & Legal Considerations. • Olympic Committees’ Role in Esports.
Week 2: Ethics, Integrity, and Governance in Esports (2 hours)
• Match-fixing, doping, and cheating (e.g., use of hacks and performance-enhancing drugs). • Gambling and betting in esports. • Role of publishers as regulators. • Emerging trends in esports governance • National and international governance structures
Week 3: Esports Player Contract (2 hours)
• What is regulated in esports player contracts? • Legal qualification of player contracts in esports. • Minors in Esports Clubs: Legal and Ethical Considerations.
Week 4: Dispute Resolution in Esports & Copyright (2 hours)
• Arbitration in esports • Mediation vs. litigation in resolving disputes. • Doping, match-fixing, and anti-cheating regulations. • Cross-border legal complexities in esports. • IP Rights in Esports: Who Owns What? • Content Creation, Streaming, and Licensing Challenges. • Publisher Control Over Esports Competitions.
